Recently I jumped on the “natural, organic, non-toxic” products bandwagon. I have always been health conscious, but it was hard to filter through the hype and as a very busy mom, I just didn’t have the time. I have been trying to make affordable, small changes in the things we use at home to reduce the amount of chemicals that we are putting in and onto our bodies.
One of the first products that I switched out in my home was what we were using on our hands. We all wash our hands, right? In addition to washing hands, many of us keep bottles of hand sanitizer in our homes, cars, work places and other areas to keep germs away. This is an easy first step to take to move towards more natural products. I’m sure we could name a million reasons to go all natural as much as we can, but here are the top 4 reasons why you should be using an all natural hand sanitizer.
1. Hand Sanitizer Ingredients
I wrote a post about the ingredients that you can find in your favorite hand sanitizers, and just what those ingredients can do to you, especially over time. It’s pretty nasty stuff, and I was shocked myself since hand sanitizer is so common and everybody uses it, right? Back then, I rarely read the labels on anything and thought that hand sanitizer was just plain old rubbing alcohol. Not so. The stuff in your old standby is bad enough to cause respiratory problems and even cancer.
2. Kids and Chemicals
As parents, we want the very best for our kids and we would do anything to keep them safe and healthy. Using sanitizers when away from home is a great way to help keep the sickies away but slathering those little hands with harmful chemicals is one of the worst things you can do. Kids are more vulnerable to chemicals in products like these because their bodies are still growing and of course, they are much smaller than adults. Their bodies simply can’t metabolize the chemicals as well as an adult.
3. Better For YOU
What about your own health? So many things we use today contain chemicals that are linked to breast cancer, reproductive issues, asthma and so much more. Everything that you put ONTO your body is absorbed INTO your body. Can you guess what these chemicals could be doing to your health in 10-20 years? If you or someone in your home has sensitive skin or allergies, it just makes sense to use more natural products. If you found a great product that works well and is affordable too, why wouldn’t you make the switch?
4. Better For The Environment
You might think that your own personal use of regular hand sanitizer doesn’t really have much of an impact on the environment, but think again…sales for these products have soared to over $100 million each year, in just the last 5 years! That’s more than 1 million pounds of triclosan (one of the most common ingredients in your sanitizer) that we dump into our lakes, rivers and oceans every year. This is bad news for future generations.
